Moon looking younger than ever

The moon is 4.36 billion years old, up to 200 million years younger than thought, according to the analysis of lunar rocks.

The estimate, reported in Thursday's issue of Nature, comes from a new dating of isotopes of lead and neodymium found in samples of ferroan anorthosite, a crustal rock that derives from magma.

A common theory for the origin of the moon is that it was created by an impact between a large planet-sized object and the nascent Earth.

The molten material, or magma, that was ejected from this giant collision progressively cooled, hardening into Earth's rocky, barren and airless satellite.

'The extraordinarily young age of this lunar sample either means that the moon solidified significantly later than previous estimates, or that we need to change our entire understanding of the moon's geochemical history,' said Richard Carlson of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington.

If the estimate is right, it implies that the oldest crusts on both Earth and moon formed at roughly the same time, both of them shortly after the big smashup.

The dating concurs with a similar age estimate for zircons found in Western Australia that are the oldest terrestrial minerals found.

The Urban Chef

One year nang food provider ng company namain ang The Urban Chef. Paborito namin ang kanilang masasarap na luto at iba't ibang putaheng inihahanda araw-araw. Mababait ang kanilang mga crew subalit ang pinakasikat sa lahat ay ang kanilang chef na si Bryan. Tapos siya ng culinary arts sa isang sikat na training center sa Metro Manila at dati rin siyang nanilbihan sa isang cruise ship sa Europe. Kaya pala magiliw siya sa mga taong kumakain sa kanila. Noong una ay madalas akong kumaing mag-isa dahil ang dalawa kong bestfrend sa opisina na sina Mayo at Arnie ay on-diet. Madalas niya akong kausapin kapag may pagkakataong nasa canteen ako at tapos na siyang magluto. Lagi niyang bukambibig ang "Kumusta? Bakit mag-isa ka lang?" kaya minsan ay naiirita na ako sa kanya. Ngingitian ko lang siya at lalapit naman siya sa akin para makipagkuwentuhan. Madaldal si Bryan at madalas ay labas-pasok na sa aking tainga ang kanyang mga kuwento. Mabuti na lang at guwapo siya kaya napagtitiisan ko ang kanyang katabilan.

Mestiso si Bryan. Matangkad. Matikas ang tindig kahit madalas na nakasuot ng apron. Nang tumagal ay nasanay na ako sa pagiging makuwento niya dahil unti-unti ko na siyang nagugustuhan. Nalaman ko ang mga personal na istorya ng kanyang buhay. Iniwan daw siya ng asawa niya habang nasa barko siya. May dalawa silang anak na nasa poder ng kanyang asawa. Magkaibigan daw sila kaya nadadalaw niya ang kanyang mga anak. Subalit dahil sa nangyari ay ayaw na raw niyang mag-asawa ulit.

Isang araw ay naglalakad ako sa mall nang makita ko si Bryan sa loob ng isang drug store. Kasama niya ang isang servie crew sa canteen ng opisina namin. Palabas na sila kaya nakita rin nila ako.

"Lei!" Kumaway sa akin si Bryan at hangos na lumapit sa akin.

"Off mo rin pala?"

"Oo, eh. Nagpasama lang ako kay Ian bumili ng gamot para sa nanay ko. Galing pa siya sa opisina niyo.

Napatingin ako sa kasama niya. Kilala ko si Ian, ang supladong service crew na hindi naman kaguwapohan. Nagsabi ito kay Bryan kung puwedeng mauna na ito dahil may dadaanan pa raw.

"Sige, pare. Sensiya na sa abala. Andito na rin naman si Lei." Umalis na si Ian.

Nagulat ako sa sinabi ni Bryan. Napatingin ako sa kanya. Nakangiti itong umakbay sa akin.
